Most Disappointing Books of 2019

2019 has come to an end, which means it's time for me to reflect on the year in regards to my most disappointing reads of the year! I know these can be pretty negative, but it's all in good fun. I normally really like reading/watching other book reader's least favorite books of the years for the same reason I read negative reviews of books I've read and even loved, because other perspectives can really bring things to light.  If I end up mentioning a book you enjoyed or even love, I hope we can agree to disagree! I value your opinion and I hope that can be reciprocated. Most of these books were honestly just disappointing, and I didn't flat out hate them. The book did not need to come out in 2019 to qualify a spot on this list, I just had to read it in 2019.

Unlike my Favorite Books of 2019 (which will be up tomorrow!), I am probably going to have a line or two under each book as short reason why it's on the list, but like always if you want my full thoughts I'll make sure to link each review! However, like my favorites list, this is in no particular order.

So, let's jump into my list of most disappointing books of 2019!

* * *

The Hating Game
 Sally Thorne
 ⭐⭐⭐
I actually really enjoyed a good portion of this. The romance itself is one I thought was well written. However, the author has a lot of moments where the main character has a lot of weird fatphobia (about other characters) and inappropriate comments that honestly kind of ruined the book for me.

The Time Traveler's Wife
Audrey Niffenegger
⭐.5

I really disliked this book. The characters were a huge issue, the time travel aspect of him meeting her as a child while he's an adult was really weird for me, and overall it was just a disappointment.

A Question of Holmes
Brittany Cavallaro
  ⭐⭐.5

This was such a disappointment ending to a really fun series. I loved books 1 & 3 but 2 & 4 were just disappointing. Although I still regard the series with a lot of love, I can't help but be bummed out.

Wayward Son
Rainbow Rowell
⭐⭐⭐.5

Looking back on this rating, I am probably being too generous, but I think it's because as the time as gone by I have just been getting more bitter at the way this book was handled. Four years of waiting and this is what we got, which is sad. I think the reason why I am keeping the rating is because how much I still love the characters.

The Kiss Quotient
Helen Hoang
⭐⭐⭐.5

I remember just being a bit disappointed by this one. I liked some aspects, which is why the rating is decent, but I remember having the opinion that the sex scenes were too frequent and definitely way too awkwardly written. The amount of poorly written sex scenes took away from the characters, which I enjoyed, and the actual plot of the story. I really hate reading erotica, and although this probably doesn't qualify as erotica, it was close enough that I was frustrated.
Bee and Puppycat Volume One
Natasha Allegri
⭐⭐⭐

Other than the first issue in this comic book volume, I was disappointed while reading this first volume. The first issue was really cool and a unique reading experience and the rest were kind of boring. I am a huge fan of the art style and the show so I was hoping for more. If you haven't seen the show, I think this comic would be really confusing to read. I didn't hate it, but it also didn't make me want to read anymore. I am interested in re-watching the show now though.

Thanks for reading!

I know this is a fairly short list! I am fairly lucky that most of the books I picked up this year were ones I enjoyed, so I couldn't find any others I read that I think needed to be on this list. What are some of your most disappointing reads of 2019?

  1. I love that you shared this - such a breath of fresh air through all the "best of" posts! It's great to read some honest opinions about what didn't work, just as much as what did. Good on you! 😉
