[Book Blogger Hop] May 18-24th: Worst Book-to-Movie Adaptations

Book Blogger Hop's purpose is to give bloggers a chance to discover and follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend bloggers, and gain followers. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday where there will be a weekly prompt following a bookish question.

Question:

What were your worst movies based off books? (submitted by Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog)

Answer:

I think the Percy Jackson movies are a hot mess, which is a bummer because it looks so good and the actors aren't awful (some are, but I loved the actor who plays Percy!) but the script is a mess and the way they jumbled the original story is a huge disappointment. I also don't love the Series of Unfortunate Events movie with Jim Carey because I am not a huge fan of him. So it's more him than the movie, which is the same reason I hate his  performance in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Overall, even with adaptations that aren't the best, I can most likely like them for some reason. I don't have too many expectations when it comes to book to movie adaptations. The movie needs to be COMPLETELY different or completely mess up the book's message and vibe for me to hate it. Even with the Percy Jackson movies. They were bad adaptations but I had fun watching them. I don't get too hung up on that kind of thing because I can always go back and read the books.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I've never read the Percy Jackson books. But maybe that's because the movie really didn't do it justice. you can check my posts out at AmethystBlue

    1. I love the Grinch animated adaption, and I think the live action one is okay I just don't like Jim Carey haha. And yeah, the Percy Jackson movies are a disappointment.

  3. Heather it is absolutely terrible when they deviate so much from the book, that you don't even know what's going on in the movie. I get so disappointed...why can't they make all movie adaptations like Harry Potter series?

    1. Right?! The Harry Potter adaptation, although had their issues, were so much fun!! There are a lot of great adaptations! But some are down right offensive.

  4. I haven't read or really watched either of the series you featured this week, and this tells me I should probably do the watching before the reading so I can at least enjoy the movies without nitpicking.

Have you watched the Series of Unfortunate Events series on Netflix starring Neil Patrick Harris? Maybe you'd like that more since you just don't like Jim Carrey. (I haven't seen that either, but I know it exists and I'm pretty sure most everyone loves NPH.)

Have a great week. - Katie

    1. Yeah! I liked the first season but after the allegations came out against the writer, David Handler (Lemony Snicket) I realized I felt weird giving him any more support than I've already given him in the past. Which is a bummer because I was enjoying the show and I LOVE NPH! Have a great week! :)

  5. I haven't actually read the Percy Jackson series, and I think I've only seen the first film but it didn't capture my attention all that much. I have heard a lot of good things about the books though, so I'm debating whether I should add them to my 'tbr' list?

I agree with what you said about being able to enjoy films even if they're not all that great of a book adaptation. There are some films which I think aren't all that great at portraying or representing the books they're based on, but I'm still able to enjoy them separately as films. And that's very true! We always have our books to go back to. Great answer!

Feel free to check out my own answer if you wish!

    1. I think if you're in the mood for a grade A quality, fast paced, easy to read middle grade series I think Percy Jackson is a great place to go. I honestly wish I read them when I was younger because I bet I would love them even more. One day I want to start from the beginning and read them all (including the spin offs).

Yeah! Some films, despite being bad adaptations, are enjoyable to read. I just can't see myself getting TOO mad as long as the movie holds the same message and value the book held. Like the Harry Potter adaptations, they're not the BEST adaptations, but they are still really true to the series's overall message.

I will of course check out yours now. Thank you for stopping by! <3

  6. I thought the first Percy Jackson films was pretty good not amazing but good enough that I thoroughly enjoyed watching the film. I have not read the Percy Jackson books yet though so I know my opinion will change after I read the books. lol Thank you so much for stopping by my blog hop last week Heather.

    1. Yeah!! I think the PJ films are a good time but as adaptations they're incredibly bad. But they look so great and the acting is fine. It's just the changes and the bad choices.

      And of course :)
