The Book Snob Tag

The Book Snob Tag was created by tia and all the books and I originally learned about this tag from Mari @ musingsofabookgirl. I recommend checking out both of their accounts by clinking the links! This is supposed to be a fun tag to talk about some book related topics that may elicit a response some may perceive as 'snobby'. Of course, it's all in good fun!

Let's jump into the questions!

Adaptation Snob: Do you always read the book before you see the movie?

I actually prefer the opposite. I enjoy watching the movie first and then reading the book. That way, I can enjoy the movie (or dislike it, if the movie is terrible of course) and then go to the book and not only get more information and have things be expanded, but to be able to appreciate both formats of the storytelling. This way, I am not as disappointed because I didn't have any expectations going into the movie. I mean, unless the movie is better than the book, but that rarely happens.

Format Snob: You can only choose one format in which to read books for the rest of your life. Which one do you choose: physical books, e-books, or audiobooks?

E-books, I have said this before but reading e-books is my favorite form of reading. I rarely do it because my library has so many books available in physical form, plus, taking book photos is always more fun physically. But in terms of reading, I prefer e-books. I am quicker, I can take better notes, my kindle is light so it's easy to get comfortable holding it, and the books themselves are significantly cheaper.

Ship Snob: Would you date or marry a non-reader?

I mean, I probably would, as long as they didn't judge or look down on me for being a reader. But then, I wouldn't date or marry anyone who judges or teases me for my hobbies. I am lucky that my husband loves to read and is almost as big of a book nerd as I am.

Genre Snob: You have to ditch one genre - never to be read again for the rest of your life. Which one do you ditch?

This is hard, because I think there are gems in all genres and I hate writing off an entire genre. I think the biggest genre I avoid is erotica. I enjoy romance, but when it becomes just porn written on the page is when I am not interested. So I'd say erotica.

Uber Genre Snob: You can only choose to read from one genre for the rest of your life. Which genre do you choose?

Fantasy. It's my favorite genre. It's the genre I reach for the most and most of my favorite books are fantasy. I think it's my favorite because it's the best genre, for me, in terms of reading to escape.

Community Snob: Which genre do you think receives the most snobbery from the bookish community?

Romance and poetry are the two genres that get the most negative reaction as a whole from the reading community, for completely different reasons. Romance gets a bad reaction because it's seen as "trashy" and not worth reading, and poetry is seen as snobbish and pretentious. I don't agree with either of those opinions. I would say comics and graphic novels get less negativity than they used to since superheroes are really popular, but they are still sometimes seen as "not really reading" which I also think is the wrong way to look at them.

Snobbery Recipient: Have you ever been snubbed for something that you have been reading or for reading in general?

Of course, I feel like everyone has at some point. I think when I was a teenager, I was often made fun of or at least called out for liking books like Twilight. I think that's fairly common because society in general like to make fun of things teen/young girls enjoy. Once, when I was in a Catholic Middle School my mom had to come to the school and defend me for reading Harry Potter, which was a hell (ba dum tss) of a time.

Thanks for reading!
Do you think I am a book snob or am I fairly laid back? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I'm the exact opposite w movies and shows based on the book. I always want to read it first, because I don't want to have a specific actor or actress in mind when I imagine a character in the book, and I can't get away from the people cast in the show when I read a book afterwards.

    1. I totally get that!! I (think) I have aphantasia, which is a condition where I can't form mental images clearly (I can kind of, but it's blurry) so I don't have that issue. But I can totally see where someone who can form images in their head would have that issue!

  2. Doesn't sound like you're a snob at all, very accepting! ;) I'm still amazed at the amount of snobbery that exists around audiobooks - the debate as to whether reading an audiobook is "really" reading always blows my mind. All reading is reading!

    1. Thank you so much! Yes! Studies exist that show that while listening to audiobooks your mind reacts the same way it does while physically reading!! I absolutely agree, all reading is reading.
