[Book Review] Daughter of Deep Silence by Carrie Ryan

I’m the daughter of murdered parents.
I’m the friend of a dead girl.
I’m the lover of my enemy.
And I will have my revenge.

In the wake of the devastating destruction of the luxury yacht Persephone, just three souls remain to tell its story—and two of them are lying. Only Frances Mace knows the terrifying truth, and she’ll stop at nothing to avenge the murders of everyone she held dear. Even if it means taking down the boy she loves and possibly losing herself in the process.

Sharp and incisive, Daughter of Deep Silence by bestselling author Carrie Ryan is a deliciously smart revenge thriller that examines perceptions of identity, love, and the lengths to which one girl is willing to go when she thinks she has nothing to lose.

 3 STARS

This is technically a re-read for me. I originally read Daughter of Deep Silence around the time it was published. But a few months ago I was cleaning out some boxes and I found this book and realized I didn't remember much from it and wanted to re-read it. So I did, and I don't regret this decision because I did have a lot of fun reading it. However, this book wasn't fully what I wanted it to be.

The characters are okay. I think they could have been better fleshed out. I liked the main character, Frances, for the most part. Or at least enough to root for her throughout the story. I found the two guy characters, Grey and Shepherd to be less developed and overall a bit generic. They were typical teen boy characters and they fit their boxes well. I don't think there was anything wrong with their characters other than them being a bit dull. However, I did really appreciate that they didn't both become love interests for Frances, making it a love triangle. I was content with her and Grey being the romance and it staying like that. When Shepherd was introduced I was a bit worried. So I am happy about that.

If you are familiar with the now ended show, Revenge, you will get a lot of similar vibes between both stories. I think Daughter of Deep Silence is definitely more skewered younger but they have a lot in common. One of those things being that they had unsatisfying endings. I was kind of bummed at the ending and all the answers we get in this story. It felt rushed and underdeveloped. Besides that, I think we were sold a story about revenge, well thought out plots, schemes, and just overall a suspenseful story. And although that stuff is there, it is overshadowed by the dull romance. It was too much romance and not enough of the revenge plot I thought  I was going to be getting. Once Frances and Grey reunite, which is early on, it feels more like a romance. And I don't think the romance was all that great. If we stuck to Frances's plan and the build up of four years I think we would have had a better story. There were also some plot holes that I feel like were convenient for the story but overall kind of didn't make much sense. Some of it felt a bit messy at times.

What is also interesting is that the story wants us to think France is this mastermind revenge seeking pro when most of the time it feels like it's been maybe a year since her rescue and not four. She seems like she's thrown herself in a situation she isn't fully ready for and it feels juvenile. We are to believe she's eighteen now, she's been mulling over this plan for four years, and that she has been playing a certain role all that time. But once the moment arrives where all that planning and preparing to step into that role around the person that will most be able to see through her act, she kind of fails.

The parts I liked about this book is the writing and Frances's story and how she copes with her trauma. First,  I love Carrie Ryan's writing style. It was so easy to fall into the story and I would come up for air and realize that an hour had passed and it felt like half that time. Evey single time Frances's trauma or past go to be too much for her emotionally I genuinely feel for her. I teared up in a few moments. There's one scene where she is describing what happened to her and Libby on the raft to Shepherd and it is so well written and detailed that I felt for them so much. I may not have been impressed with Frances's stealth skills, but  I really felt for her when we got to see past the mask she was hiding behind. I think that was really well done.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. I do wish Frances was a bit more prepared and badass at getting her revenge but I had a lot of fun reading this story. I think if you're in the mood for a fast paced revenge plot this may be the book for you. I think this book would be a great summer/beach read because of the entertainment factor.

Thanks for reading!
