[Top 5 Wednesday] Fandoms I've Quit

It's time for this week's Top Five Wednesday! This has been created by gingerreadslainey and it also has a Goodreads group. I am hoping to do these posts (or other weekly Wednesday posts) more often as long as I am interested in the current prompt! This week's prompt is about five fandoms I am not in anymore. A good chunk of my answers can be temporary, I am honestly not sure. I typically only really put myself in the fandoms for Harry Potter, Disney, and Hamilton. Any other books other than Harry Potter are things I like or even love but I don't love the word fandom. I think a lot of fandoms can be a bit toxic, so I try to stay away.

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
I really enjoyed the first book in this series but the second one was definitely one I didn't love. So much so that I only vaguely remember what happens at the end. I would have to re-read the second book to read the third, and I am not sure if I will ever be motivated to read it because of how hard it was for me to get into it last time. I own the first two, and they're on my shelves, so I am not writing off a chance for me to re-read them, but I am not rushing to do it anytime soon.

The Gallagher Girl Series by Ally Carter
I loved this series 5-6 years ago, it's so much fun but I think I am a bit too old to really relate to the characters or even say I am in the "fandom" anymore. I may re-read the ones I own and see if I can finish off the series, but that isn't a top priority. I highly recommend them for readers 12+ because they are a lot of fun.

Gone Series by Michael Grant
I enjoyed the first four or five books in this series before stopping. I think the writing is consistently juvenile, and as I was learning more in college about writing and reading I realized I wasn't into the series anymore. It was a bit too all over the place for me. Recently I have realized the author spews problematic thoughts on social media which made me happy I stopped reading when I did.

John Green Books (?)
Okay! Hear me out, the last John Green book came out in 2012, which was The Fault in Our Stars, which I love. However, that was five years ago. I have changed a lot and grew as both as a person and a reader. I am worried that if and when he does release another book, I may not like it because no matter how much I love TFiOS and Looking For Alaska, what if I like them for nostalgic reasons? Have I changed too much? I suppose we will see. I'll never stop being a Nerdfighter though, I support what John and Hank do so much. I am just being realistic in the idea that I may be too old for his books now. Maybe his next book will blow me away and prove me wrong, and his past books will always hold a place in my heart, but I am staying apprehensive.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas
Okay, another one that seems a bit crazy for me, but once again hear me out. I really have issues with the last two (let's be honest, the last three) books in the series. I think a lot of the characters have changed negatively and I don't love the direction in which the series is going. So this is another one where I am still "in the fandom" but I may not be for long. We have two more books to go, so I will probably stick it out to the end, but I am not as enthused as I once was.

Thanks for reading!

What are some fandoms you have stopped being apart of?

  1. I feel the same way about the John Green books :( I've been wanting to reread, but I'm so nervous!

    1. Right!? It makes me sad for obvious reasons, but also because it means we are getting old. I am definitely thinking about re-reading TFiOS in the future, and I am definitely going to give John's new book a try whenever it is out, but it is a bit scary. Especially since John Green books were my favorite in college.

  2. The third book in 'The Red Queen' series is probably one of the best books I've ever read. This is just me though who didn't mind the speed of the second book, but I believe the third book is much faster paced. I would highly recommend you try the series again if you have any interest in it or re-read the whole thing once book four comes out next year.

    1. Oooh really? Thanks! I may request it from the library then and see if maybe I could change my mind! I really enjoyed book one but book two completely soured me from the series. Thank you for telling me!

    2. It's no problem! I admit, it lost me too at one point, but once you force yourself about 2/3 of the way through, it flows a lot better. I hope you enjoy it!
