[Book Blogger Hop] April 21-27th

Book Blogger Hop's purpose is to give bloggers a chance to discover and follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend bloggers, and gain followers. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday where there will be a weekly prompt following a bookish question.

Question:
Would you stop reading a book if an element of the plot strongly clashed with your personal beliefs, or would you continue reading until you finished the book?

My response:

If I think a book is well written and opens up the conversation in a respectful way I am always up to read new perspectives of any topic. However, I am not a fan of preachy books that  are heavy on an agenda. I know this ties into respect, which I have already mentioned, but I also do not like when the topic bashes or pokes fun of the other side of the conversation. I am not a fan of reading heavily negative opinions about topics that mean a lot to me. But I do try to keep an open mind for other perspectives.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Yes great answer and I agree with you I never thought about that in that way. If the plotline and concepts is handle well and with respect I would give the book a try as well. Have a great weekend and happy blog hopping.

    1. Happy blog hopping! And I agree! As long as everyone's being respectful I don't mind reading a different perspective.

  2. Respect is the perfect word.

I read two books that were very disrespectful to women, and I would not continue.

    Thanks for a wonderful answer.

    Happy Hopping!!

    1. Ugh that's the worst. I recently read a book that was really heavy on sexual violence against women without it having any real impact. And it made me pretty upset. I agree that respect is important!

  3. Great answer and I love your use of the word respect. I feel very similar but I don't think I stated it quite as eloquently!

    1. Awww thanks!! Respect is so important. It's the only way both sides of any argument can have a real conversation!

  4. Good answer. I don't like it when another opinion or viewpoint is treated with disrespect by the author.

    1. I agree. When the book is tackling different opinions disrespectfully it shows the reader that the author doesn't want to have a conversation but instead wants to drive home that their side is the only right one, which is so close minded!

  5. Yes, I feel similarly. I can respect reading about other views, but have little tolerance when it comes to preachy-ness or bashing of others.

Thank you for sharing. I hope you have a great week!

    1. I agree! Preachy books are so hard to get behind! I think no matter the topic the author or writer should want to invite their readers to have conversations and to have discussions!

  6. I agree that if a book is "well-written and opens up" an eloquent conversation about various themes, I will continue reading. It is those books that border on propaganda and have repetitive content, leading me to believe they are trying to "suck me in", that I stop reading.

    1. I agree! I am not into preachy books that do not open up a conversation. I don't want to read someone's opinion and not be invited to think critically from both sides. It makes it hard to fully form an opinion of my own.
