[Top 5 Wednesday] Middle Grade Books

It's time for this week's Top Five Wednesday! This has been created by gingerreadslainey and it also has a Goodreads group. I am hoping to do these posts (or other weekly Wednesday posts) more often as long as I am interested in the current prompt! This week's prompt I am discussing five books that I think would be great for middle grade readers.

Miss Cavendish Home For Boys and Girls by Claire Legrand
This is a spookier story about a duo boy and girl, two best friends who are total opposites. Victoria is known as a teacher's pet, she does her homework and takes rules very seriously. Her best friend Lawrence is a disaster and she's constantly trying to help him improve himself. But Lawrence goes missing and he isn't the only kid who does. Victoria discovers that the Cavendish Home For Boys and Girls is not what it appears to be. This reminded me a lot of Coraline by Neil Gaiman, another amazing middle grade spooky story.

LumberJanes by Noelle Stevenson
I love this comic book series so much and I recommend it to any younger readers, especially girls because the whole cast of characters are girls at a all girls camp. It's got some paranormal elements to it but overall it is about friendship. I absolutely love it.

George by Alex Gino
This is an essential for younger readers, at least I think so. It's a simple story about a transgendered girl named George. She identifies as trans (and is still learning herself) but no one else knows. She wants to audition for the lead role of Charlotte in Charlotte's Web but everyone knows her as a boy named George so she is scared. It's a really sweet and innocent story that I actually wish I had available to me when I was younger because introducing different genders and sexualities at a young age makes it easier for young LGBTQIA kids to self identify but also to have a more welcoming and accepting society.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio
This is another really important story for young kids to read. It's about a young character named August who was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to school. He is finally going to school and he learns a lot about himself but also about others. It's a sweet heartwarming story about acceptance, friendship, and love.

Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black
I loved these books when I was younger. This series is a story about a pair of twins and their older sister who discover this world of creatures right outside their new home. It's got a great cast of characters, so many interesting creatures, and the art is gorgeous.

Thanks for reading!

What are some middle grade books you recommend?
