Book Blogger Hop's purpose is to give bloggers a chance to discover and follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend bloggers, and gain followers. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday where there will be a weekly prompt following a bookish question.
Question:
Have you ever read a book or books you would consider "toxic" because of the effect it (they) had on you? If so, which one(s)?
Answer:
I think most Colleen Hoover books are very toxic and God awful. I think the amount of misogynistic and sexist characters (paired with awful writing) in her books is enough for me to stay away from her books. I'll never understand why she is so popular and well loved in the book community and it worries me to think that young readers could pick up those books and think that those relationships are something to strive for. Other than that, I cannot think of many specific books on the top of my head that are toxic. I think the New Adult genre is something that has a lot of flaws, many of the books romanticize toxic relationships and I think it needs to be fixed.
I haven't read any of hers, but this definitely tells me to stay the course. I have a friend who LOVES her books. I'm not big into romance so I've always stayed away - despite the massive recommendations.
ReplyDeleteYeah :/ I just don't understand the hype at all. I don't mind romance but I can't read romances with unhealthy relationships. It ruins the whole story for me. I don't understand why so many New Adult writers write fantasies where the relationship isn't a healthy one.
DeleteI have only read two books by Colleen Hoover one that I didn't love that much and one that I really loved and enjoy. But I totally understand why you don't like her books and that's totally alright. I know not ever reader is going to love the same books that I like and that is absolutely ok everybody has a right for there opinions on books. I still love reading there reviews because it makes me understand more better why they didn't like that specific book. Have a great weekend Heather.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!!
DeleteAnd yeah. I mean to each their own. But I'm not a huge fan of her work. And that's why I like reading reviews too! As long as everyone's being civil I think reviews help open up great conversations! :) <3
I have never read a Colleen Hoover book, but from what you mentioned here, I don't think that is a healthy thing for young readers to hear about.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely worries me!! I always say give it a try if you're interested but maybe keep in mind that the relationship is going to be a bit toxic.
DeleteUgh toxic relationships are the worst. I can't believe they're a hot writing subject.
ReplyDeleteMe either!!
DeleteI haven't read a Colleen Hoover book before, but they've always been books that I've had on my TBR pile - I'm still curious to read one and find out why they are loved by many.
ReplyDeleteI say go for it! It may be for you, it just isn't for me! Different opinions are always welcome. I do want to read her other books one day just to get my reviews out there and also see if maybe there's one book of hers I like!
DeleteI've not come across Colleen Hoover before; I'll have to look her up and see what it's all about.
ReplyDeleteI say try it out! It may be for you, it may not be. You never know!
DeleteWow. I've only read one Colleen Hoover book before (Hopeless) and even though it wasn't light and fluffy (in fact it was quite harrowing at points!) I never had her listed in a 'toxic' column in my head. 🤔
ReplyDeleteThe two books I read by her I thought were really misogynistic and problematic. She has a lot of books, and like I said I had only read two in the past, so others could be not as bad, but I definitely found her characters and themes to be toxic! But hey, everyone's different.
