[Book Blogger Hop] May 12-18th

Book Blogger Hop's purpose is to give bloggers a chance to discover and follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend bloggers, and gain followers. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday where there will be a weekly prompt following a bookish question.

Question:
If you read a book you end up hating, do you stay away from that author, or do you give them another chance?

My response:
Depends on why I hated the book. If the author seems to have a problematic view or beliefs that I didn't agree with there's a probability I won't give the author another chance. One author that is an example of that is Colleen Hoover. I do not like giving problematic authors my money, but if I am still interested in their books I may borrow them from the library. If I do not like a certain book of an author because of the story, there's a good chance I'd give another of their books a try. But if I don't like their writing style I probably won't because writing style is something that carries on throughout a persons writings. However, before making any decisions like that I also pay attention to what other reviewers are saying along with the book community in general. I never ban myself from authors completely because people change, but I also don't like giving my time or support to authors I do not think deserve it.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Now that's a well drafted answer! I just gave a verdict of jay or nay. But I agree with you! I might just be a bit judgmental this week!

Happy weekend and here's my Friday Meets: http://marelithalkink.blogspot.co.za/2017/05/friday-meets-12-may-2017.html

  2. Borrowing from the library is a great idea.

    1. Thanks! Yeah! I used to buy books all the time in college but now I rely on my local library. Especially with all the interlibrary loans that I do.

  3. The library is a good idea if you're unsure how much you'll enjoy something.

    1. Yes! Because I use my library so often if I buy a book it's either a sequel, a book I have already read, or a really good deal, or I have no self control in the moment. But mostly the first two haha.

  4. Terrific answer...makes perfect sense.

I agree about if a book conflicts with my beliefs I won't continue to read that author.

    Have a great weekend.

    Happy Hopping!!

    1. Thank you! I will check your link our now! And I agree, when an author seems to have a completely separate view point from me I tend to stay away for the most part.

  5. You are the first one I've seen bring up problematic in their answer. TBH I'm relieved at least one person said it...

I couldn't agree more and am avoiding that same author! Except borrowing it from the library is still supporting the authors in a way.

    1. Yes! And that is true, I'll admit that has crossed my mind. I kind of feel like I am making up for it by giving an honest review, even if that means a low star rating. I do tend to stay away from her books though. But if I want to join the conversation about her problematic plots I feel like I need to read the book to have a concrete opinion.

  6. I will give an author a second chance if I see their fans have also not liked that particular book.:)

    1. oooh that is a really good point. Normally I look to certain reviewers I trust, but I never thought to look at the fan's reactions. That is super interesting!

  7. I am not familiar with Colleen Hoover, other than knowing her books seem quite popular. Now you've got me curious why you don't care for her.

Writing style is a big one for me in not wanting to continue with an author's work.

I hope you have a great week. Thank you for sharing!

    1. I really dislike her because of the constant themes that come up in her books. They can be very sexist and misogynistic. I find her writing to be really juvenile, and her characters are typically 20-27 (New Adult genre, so it's early to late twenty college kids - which means there is erotica in her books also - just a heads up if you're interested in trying her out and may not be into that) but they act way younger in maturity. Her main female characters are always weak and unable to take care of themselves, and the guy is always really aggressive, sometimes borderline non-consensual, and creepy.

I have only read Confess (I own Ugly Love, so I will probably give it a try this summer before deciding to donate it) and I really disliked it. From the weaker main female character, to the creepy love interest who said he "deserved" to have sex with her. It is just too problematic for me. I wanted to read about healthy relationships.

I agree with writing style, because that typically doesn't change unless you're reading from a younger author. But I have been wrong about that, I have had a few authors have poor writing in the first of the series and as I continued on with the series the writing has improved.

Thank you for stopping by! <3

  8. Excellent points! Since this was a topic, I've realized that I have a couple of authors I actually do avoid. Like the author of the girl on the train... just too dull for me.

    1. Gah yeah that was a dull book. The movie was the same (but more entertaining probably because it was a movie so it's easier to get your attention). I recommend staying away from Colleen Hoover. Gah. I have one of her books in my boxes and I'm considering either reading it to get my money's worth or just donating (or both).
