[Top 5 Wednesday] Favorite Angsty Romances

It's time for this week's Top Five Wednesday! This has been created by gingerreadslainey and it also has a Goodreads group. I am hoping to do these posts (or other weekly Wednesday posts) more often as long as I am interested in the current prompt! This week's prompt I am talking about my top five favorite angsty romances. I normally am not a huge angsty romance fan, but there are definitely a few ones that slip into my favorite books that I can get behind.

Karou and Akiva (Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor)
Going into too much detail of their relationship can be a pretty big spoiler for readers who haven't had a chance to pick up the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series. So I'll probably keep this short and say that they're one of my favorite angsty romances that I have read. I really like that there isn't a love triangle, and the angst that happens between them is really magical and a bit romantic. The angst they have in their relationship doesn't seem trivial or unnecessary. I understand where it's coming from and it makes sense for their story. I think this book series is such an amazing one, and I highly recommend it.

Clary and Jace (The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare)
I am going to be starting the third book soon, so I don't know what's going to happen fully for these two, but this relationship is the textbook definition of angsty romance. They both want each other, but they can't have each other. I really disliked them the first time I gave this story a shot, but I think I am liking them a lot more this time around. Especially Jace, I've somehow become a fangirl of Jace Wayland. It's weird that reading a book at a specific time in your life can sometimes determine your enjoyment of the book.

Hazel and Augustus (The Fault in Our Stars by John Green)
This story is definitely angsty because Hazel and Augustus know they can't be together forever because of their cancer. Which is why they talk about having their own little infinities in the time they do have together. It's really sweet and I definitely found it romantic when I read this book for the first time. They become so close and give each other such big pieces of themselves that by the end you feel like they've taken pieces of you as well. This is another book (along with many John Green books) that I think I read at the perfect time. I think this book meant so much to be when it released because of how emotional the romance made me.

Cath and Levi (Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell)
Cath is a character I really related to when it came to her anxiety and personal struggles. I think her problems with talking to people and her fear of change are things that strikes a chord with many readers who pick up Fangirl. It's hard not to. I think it's her insecurities that really bring the angst between the relationship between her and Levi. Also, her taking on the responsibility as a whole of taking care of her father definitely brought angst into their relationship because she used it as an excuse to hide from her problems at school. I think Levi and her work well together because they balance each other out, which is something that scared Cath.

Dash and Lily (Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by David Levithan & Rachel Cohen)
This book is such a cute little romance, but there is a section of the book where things get angsty. Once Dash and Lily finally meet there are some insecurities on both of their ends that makes the romance a bit angsty. I think it's handled well and it makes their relationship that much cuter by the end of the story.

Thanks for reading!

    1. They're too sweet not to love. <3 gah. My heart is broken. I need to re-read that book. Or even re-watch the movie. Even if either make me bawl like a baby.
